During our Play & Learn sessions we have been highlighting and promoting the various Surrey County Council’s ‘Learn With Me’ campaign leaflets and the ‘What to expect, when? document (4 Children) with our families.  We recently focussed on the ‘Count With Me’ leaflets which gave us the opportunity to share tips and ideas with parents of how to support and encourage their child’s mathematical development through play.  We also incorporated some of Surrey Early Years and Childcare Service’s ideas of how to introduce mathematical language through bubble play and the ‘snake bubble’ activity proved to be great fun and very popular with both the children and their parents as you can see from the photos below.

Our Children’s Centre recently took part in the Change4Life Sugar Swaps promotion and we were delighted with our families enthusiastic response and participation in our activities and the high number of families who signed up to receive the campaigns free resources.

During our Play & Learn sessions at the Centre, children and their parents had great fun together creating healthy eating pizzas and smoothies using recipes from the free recipe book that families can receive as part of the free resource pack.  Babies and younger children enjoyed exploring the taste and texture of fruit and trying the delicious smoothie they all helped to produce, whilst the older children cut up and tasted the various pizza toppings; tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, peppers etc before creating their very own pizzas to take home.

Please see below some of the photos taken at our Centre during the activities and also photos of the children enjoying their pizzas at home which their parents kindly sent in to share with us.

Change4Life offers lots of ideas, recipes and games to help families live a healthier lifestyle and gives opportunities for families to take part in their regular promotions which often include free resources and money-off vouchers.  Click on our Change4Life link or telephone the Children’s Centre (01276 473093) for more information.

Under the Sea

During September our theme for our Play and Learn sessions was Under the Sea.

The children had the opportunity to sponge paint our fabulous murals at the back of the Children’s Centre at our Messy Monday sessions, as well as creating great collages and sand pictures.

The children who came along to the Tiddler Time sessions had fun exploring wet and dry messy play – using squirty sea creatures in the water trays and searching for treasure in the sand!

There were plenty of sea-related puzzles and toys for everyone to share – a great  time was had by all!

Following on from our successful participation in the Every Child A Talker campaign, we are keen to continue promoting activities to help your child’s speech development.  There are leaflets and resources available with helpful tips and ideas for you to try at home, to encourage your child to communicate through messy play.

Hello In The Park

On Monday 12th March 2012 a group of us joined together in the park to say ‘HELLO’ for the fifth task of our Communication Decathlon.  The goal was to get 400 people to say ‘Hello’, which we did – with the help of our people paper chain the children had made over the previous two weeks.

We also played ‘Hunt The Hello’ – looking for ‘hello’ in different languages, hidden around the park.  With the help of a megaphone, children’s video camera and camera, we had a fabulous time.

A big ‘Thank You’ to Vicky, one of our mums, for taking some wonderful photographs of which you can see here – more are displayed in the Children’s Centre.
